Minimizing process and utility wastes economizes resources and saves water and energy. Chemical plants, pulp mills, oil and gas wells, and manufacturing operations all have opportunities to improve efficiency.
Whether these improvements make sense from a regulatory, capital, or public image point of view is the question to be answered. The answers may be obvious for issues such as regulatory penalties. However, installing cogenerators, recycling waste streams, and diverting process gases for stripping may improve plant efficiency but tangible data is needed to support this.
